If you were starting a porn membership site today in 2019 would you still do the traditional paysite model where you rely mostly on affiliates to promote your site and try to get enough members to pay the typical $19.95 or $24.95 subscription? Or would you take a more social media approach and do a “fans” site or offer your content on a pay per view basis on the most popular tubes?

Seems like the lack of successful new porn sites lately that follow the traditional biz model makes me wonder if that biz model is dying or dead and another biz model is better.

When we launched Sticky, it didn’t fit nicely into the niche’s that traditional webmasters promote and although we have an AP for the site, we don’t promote it.

We also wanted to be able to support more international traffic so we have pay options that can’t be shared with affiliates anyway as there is no integration available into the APs that adult programs are able to use.

So, Sticky launched on social media and we relied on QC heavily to start it. Now it out-earns QC reliably.

I’ve said before, from both sides of the coin, that I think webmaster payouts are too high and are becoming unsupportable with the costs of serving and creating content.

I think that Thirds is a more fair split for everyone – I’m not pro in the 50% recurring payout and I’m not a believer in the 10% either. I think that the current system is becoming a detriment to new start-ups and quality content. But this is only one of the many reasons that traditional porn sites are dying out and not being replaced.

I disagree, its already difficult to make enough for smaller affiliate. Cutting it down further would just make it pointless for even more to work as affiliates.

But also as I always point out to new sponsors, affiliates sales are sales they would otherwise not get. The sales or traffic affiliates have are based on whatever sites they promote, if a sponsor site isnt among the ones promoted it won’t have a chance to make that sale. That means however much the affiliate rate is (providing it covers the cost of having the member / bandwith) it’s a extra income to the sponsor. There is nothing to lose from having affiliates, it’s extra revenue they would otherwise not have.

The problem isnt the affiliate model but a mix of things related to content production costs, piracy and a change in customer habits affected by the huge amounts of free porn. I think the rise of the new model / fan sites are proof of this. They are much cheaper in terms of production, after all the majority of the content on those sites are amateur videos shot by the models, production cost is near zero and they pull in traffic from fans that already know them. Sadly this will probably impact the actual real member sites that made some of these stars famous.

Even 5 years ago, I would have agreed with you whole-heartedly, but as fewer and fewer adult pay sites are launching, the idea that a regularly updated site isn’t being promoted by the bulk of webmasters is no longer feasible. Does the affiliate model need to disappear? No. But I do think that changes are on the horizon for us as with so many other areas of our industry.
