Comments: Enable or Disable?

Hi
I want to know where comments are stored in WordPress site? it’s is in hosting or database?
if it’s in database, having a lot of comments make site (database access) slower?
Is it worth enabling comments on a wordpress site? or it will slow site and not worth it?

I have just fully disabled them on all of my adult sites because I have been getting thousands of spam comments all the time and there were maybe just a few legit comments out of all so it does not make sense to keep it.
