    So the law was signed and age verification is coming to the UK. OFCOM has said they’ll start by blocking the biggest sites and then working their way down.

    IMHO, this is just a huge fucking disaster all the way around. Apparently it will cost 2-8 GBP ($2.50 to $10+) to verify someone’s age. Years ago I remember figuring out that I made about 2 cents a visit. So there’s just no way to comply and make money. I can see paysites jumping through the hoops. They’ll have PG-13 tours and then raise the cost of membership by enough to validate the member. And trials for UK customers will be a thing of the past.

    So the way I see this playing out is OFCOM blocks the top 20 sites and UK visitors will start trying out the smaller sites that aren’t blocked (yet). Then MindGeek might implement an AVS, but they’ll make people pay for it, though they’ll offer it free to their paysite customers, but it will work across all their sites so people will pay to get so many of the big tube sites back. Then the OFCOM block list gradually grows and smaller sites won’t have AVS because it costs too much. Or they’ll implement it but charge the surfers. Either way UK surfers start getting aggravated so they start using VPNs. At which point everything will sorta go back to normal, but there will always be a hit on traffic from the UK.

    Personally the only system I see working is that all websites be required to label their content in a a factual manner with no culturally relative terms (e.g. nothing like “appropriate for ages 17+”), then let individuals, parents, and even governments filter as they see fit. But the filtering has to be on the device level so all browsers on a computer, phone or tablet have the same filtering. But that’s not at all what the UK is implementing. What the UK is doing will just be a miserable failure.

    I see it working slightly differently. Porn sites will just block UK traffic and new companies will sprout up offering UK residents access through VPN, or whatever it’s called. And the government will be left scratching its collective head wondering why their plan didn’t work.

    As there are so many websites (about 1 billion estimated) and 12% of those are porn, 120 million I don’t see Ofcom being able to actually act on the law. It has an annual budget of around ?100 million and employs around 800 staff……How many new sites are added each year, week and day?

    How many of those houndreds of thousands of sites all link to “hubs” using affiliate links? What if those big sites (pornhub, xhamster, corbin fisher, brazzers etc) are on the list?

    There is age verification in germany for a long time now – but nobody was “brave” enough to enact web filters…

    I agree with the op’s predictions.

    I also have a feeling the big tube sites will somehow benefit from this, they have the resources and it might simply bring them in more membership sales.

    Only time will tell how effectively they will be at blocking adult sites, they could implement it so that all adult sites are blocked by default and then only unblock the ones found to use age verification.. But who knows.

    I guess one way around it would be to create a softcore version of your site and direct traffic to it if you do get blocked. I’ve been working on one and originally was thinking about redirecting traffic already now to it however I’m not sure i will bother and do anything at all.

    But again as the op predicts, porn fans will eventually find their way to VPNs which hopefully will work around filters.

    Without reading or caring much about the law at this point, wouldn’t it be easier to just censor tour graphics and if the visitor is from England show them those?

    Like those old magazine with the dots… have a normal folder and a censored folder.

    if location is england, $path = ‘churchedup’; else $path = ‘notinanannystate’;

    yes, possibly but no one knows what you need to do to comply with the new law, for example if censored images are enough.

    I told you that they would be making money on this somehow. I wonder if this service will be available on other sites outside their own network or they plan to keep it to themselves.

    I just noticed it says:
    AgeID will also allow other websites to participate.
