For those that have secure adult affiliate promo tool areas, I assume your motivation for this is to keep down misrepresentation and theft of your content. If I owned a program I would probably have it that way as well. Particularly if the content was exclusive. Also so affiliates can have private stat information available as well of course.

Through past discussions here regarding affiliate update emails, many have said that they don’t frequent affiliate promo tool areas a lot, but tend to rely on email updates. Affiliate promo tool sites are usually there for reference if ever the affiliate needs them. At least in my eyes anyway.

To the question. Is it that much more safe to have affiliate areas where people have to log in? A lot of CCBill run programs don’t usually use secure areas. For those of you who are in this group, do you notice a large amount of theft and/or misrepresentation of your content?

For those whose who do have secure affiliate areas, do you feel you’re content is safer as a result?

having a secure affiliate area keeps surfers from downloading your content, but also programs that give you links have to have you log in so they “know” who you are. on the other hand, a lot of us find it easier to get to the content without logging in. i write blogs for clients for programs i am not signed up for, as do other blog writers i know.

Its not only safer (as it protects the webmasters personal data, stats, etc) but its also the best way to ensure you are providing your affiliate with proper URLs, promo codes, embed codes, RSS feeds, etc that contain their affiliates code for proper credits.

But I guess when dealing with ccbill affiliates only, that may be a bit different as you don’t really have the personal data and stats to protect yourself.

Yes I thought of that as well mavricks. Regarding blogging for others and not having to sign up for a program you don’t normally promote. Public affiliate areas can be helpful in that sense.

Rick – Nats is great in the aspect of assuring proper link codes are used. I do love that about it. In the long run I can see how it would be much safer to have a secure area. CCBill does have some limitations in that regard as we’ve discussed in the past many times. Cookies included.

In regard to proper link coding, as the UKScallyLads affiliate manager, I really try to make the url editing as simple as possible for affiliates. It’s why I came up with our link code tool for our FHGs. The convenience really helps affiliates and being one myself I know how important that is.

Thanks for your knowledgeable feedback folks!

I think the most important thing for having a secure affiliate area is the protection of the affiliate’s personal data. Since almost all affiliate programs give access to the affiliates personal information, using unecrypted pages to display this data is too risky with all the identity theft going on. When I notice sponsor is not using secure pages for that information, I stop promoting them and make sure to let them know to remove all my personal data from their program since I do not want my personal information being that easily accessible.

Prior to making our affiliate tools area secure, we often found that links were being posted inviting others to visit and download the entire library of images and clips. After making the area secure, affiliates complained that they didn’t want to have to log in to get the materials. On investigation, we determined that those that were complaining were not making sales in any case, so we have kept the area behind a log-in.

Personally, I prefer it behind a login, even though I am no where near being what you would call a power affiliate. I just think it makes more sense to have some form of security, to the goodies.

My only bitch, is that the navigation & instructions on use are so skimpy in some, that it becomes nothing more than guesswork on where stuff is, how to use it, or grab it even.

Yet that is also one more reason for having it secured.

It only stands to reason that secure areas would be preferred. Just as I thought.

With a lot of CCBill programs it’s not really necessary to secure their affiliate areas due to stats being accessible in the actual CCBill affiliate control panel. NATS and other programs however are a different matter. I certainly appreciate the secure login areas for programs run with those management systems.

    Thanks for the great feedback.
