DrameGuest
i thought this was something to consider regarding the decline of the value of internet advertising.

DOCGuestI’m not buying it.
I can accept that Google is on the decline, but not that internet advertizing in general is in any serious way.
Google has long been open to abuse, the results of advertising with them are pretty weak (from my own experience) and they cannot compete with direct partnership with other sites.
Why would I spend £200 over a month with Google, hoping my ads will be accepted, constantly worrying about the CPC, wondering if a competitor is clicking me to waste my budget… when I can get a great banner, on a great site, for less, in the niche I need without paying Google a single penny?
I personally think Google’s revenue in Ad-words is down primarily because they prey on new businesses, fewer businesses are starting up and fewer are being duped into pumping cash they don’t have into wasted advertising with them.
The economic down-turn might slow things for a while, but I really don’t think there is a single leader in on-line advertising. Google may be a middle man, but there are millions of others who make direct advertising arrangements with sites all the time, and I think they are far more profitable.
GibsterGuestI have one adult affiliate sponsor that I only promote through banner ads and I make a lot of money with them, so while banners might not be as great as they were, people still click ads.
Maybe Google’s ads are down so much because they’re screwing around so much and changing things.
Maybe their ad revenues are down because they’re doing all of that sidebar crap to try and keep their traffic and advertisers are getting pissed with them.
I don’t think Google is a great example to use when addressing advertising issues. They’re too volatile. People love to hate them.
I just read an article about General Motors killing their Facebook ads because no one was clicking. The article cited that the reasons were either Facebook people don’t click ads or they can’t see the ads with all the clutter.
thommyGuestMaybe straight forward banner sales is going down but I can’t see indirect adverts like what Trip Advisor does being on the way out, quite the contrary. In their case they allow you to review reviews of hotels but also offer you a way to book them. It’s affiliate sales like we do but also adds value to their site. Same thing with porn blogs and review sites, we’re essentially helping them take decisions on where to spend money.
Google’s ads (AdChoice / Adsense) are not that great in the first place. For example I recently booked a hotel in Santorini (Greece) and since then be plagued by Google Adverts showing me more hotels in Greece. A little too late – Its actually got me pissed off with Google and found it very intrusive. I bet I’m not the only one.
PerlbrainGuestI am with you on that thommy. I’ve got Google ads popping up on shit I’ve already bought.
DrameGuestThe one thing I know for certain is that I’m not the target demographic for internet advertising. I don’t click on ANYTHING. Mostly because when I get online I have specific things I’m looking for. Other than the times when they freeze the site/video to cram the advert down my throat, I rarely even notice them anymore.
