My partner and I were just discussing ‘giving away too much’ tonight. Over the years we’ve found ourselves giving away more and more for free and it seems just about everyone else has too. Sales have kept us making a good living, but they certainly have not been where I think they should be.
An interesting note: looking at our affiliate sales (to other adult sites) our top selling site over the past year has been a site that rarely gives away dick shots, let alone penetration or cum shots. They seem to being doing quite well.
We all know about all the free content out there from legal & illegal tube sites. I almost think if those of us, as site owners, give away too much on our own sites we’re just perpetuating the problem. What’s the incentive to join?
I’m working on some less revealing tours and will be testing them over the next few weeks.
jaredlGuestIf I had a choice, I would scrap every single tube site including my own. I do think less is more when it comes to making sales. But unfortunatley it’s too late now unless bandwidth suddenly becomes very expensive.
However, I think we can’t only blame Free stuff for problems with sales. We’re still in a really bad economic climate, people are holding on to their cash and spending patterns have changed. Our industry can’t possibly be unaffected when everyone else is suffering (still).
jigneshgGuestHopefully its not too late, tubes are maturing like tgp sites did years back, we are starting to see change with legal tube sites realising that 5 to 20 minute clips are anti-productive for sales. And illegal tube sites are getting shut down or sued, which is another good change. (wow, look at me being the eternal optimist!!!)
But yeah, I agree that it really is more than just free stuff, its the shitty economy and having to watch the news every day tell me how much worse things are…
matehtGuestand yet my best sales are almost always for sites that show plenty of dick and action. when other sites i’ve promoted censored or stopped showing as much, sales generally went right in the toilet.
it’s possible the reason your best seller is your best seller has nothing to do with how much they show so much as the quality of their models and photography, or even the quality of their tour itself or the join page.
rickGuestI just had a JUB surfer send me a private message saying: “Just wanted to say i visited your website, and man you’ve got one of the hottest collection of men there. i got off just watching the previews.”
Glad I could help.
robsonGuestOh man, that sure sucks. Talk about a slap in the face.
I’ve tested the “less is better approach” myself a few times using not so revealing pics and even videos at times. For some sites, it works, for others, it bombs.
For instance, putting up a few non-revealing Xtra Inches shots isn’t going to do much when everyone else promoting them has got huge dicks slamming asses in free preview vids. LOL. However, using a few less pics in a collage to promote a gay for pay site like Broke Straight Boys will work for me most times.
I agree that it isn’t just giving away too much that’s the main problem here. The fucking media is scaring the shit out of everyone. Personally, I don’t think the economy is as bad as what the “experts” make it out to be. I still see people having no issues about putting $100 worth of gas into their 4x4s twice a week, having big parties and traveling all the way to Chicago from Vancouver to watch the Stanley Cup semi-finals games. I have 2 friends that did exactly that.
Things ARE rougher than they were for a lot of people, but I really believe this is more a knee-jerk reaction to the damn fear mongers in the media. I really wish they’d just shut up. Oprah too.
jaredlGuestI totally agree, I really don’t think removing nudity or certain hardcore content from tours is a one-fits all solution to sales ratios. Hardcore / Nudity has always outsold or generate more clicks on my sites than softcore.
It’s all about enticing people, show something really hot and horny.. something they really want to see more of. That probably works best with hardcore / nudity but it doesn’t have to be massive amounts of it as long as you also show that there is plenty of more where that came from.
RomixGuestIn my experience you do have to get a surfer *very* horny to pull out their credit card and make that impulse buy, but to quote a Thai expression ‘100 people, 100 habits’ and there are many different ways to get someone horny.
Some people get really turned on just seeing someone’s face, and will sign up from seeing that alone. For others, it’s a big cock, a good body, or seeing hot sex. I don’t think there is any one way that is necessarily better then the other, what’s important is that you have good unique content, and know how to market correctly to your niche.
I do think there is something to be said for ‘not giving away the farm’ so of course I wouldn’t give them the full cumshots or too long of samples on the tour. However, it may not be a bad thing if someone does get off just looking at your tour…chances are that will make them come back and hopefully the next time they will buy. I’d rather they come to my tour to jack off and hopefully buy in the future then going to a tube site to get off and never buy anything!
williamfnGuestI agree. And the other thing is that someone who jerked off to your tour is likely to tell their friends about “this hot porn site.” That’s a great marketing tool.
I also think, and Romix was sort of saying the same thing, it’s really just a matter of putting the right model in front of the right surfer. If I were a surfer and I saw a sexy model pop up on my screen, I’d be hauling out my credit card. You couldn’t stop me.
