since installing Google XML Sitemaps in our WP adult sites on june 5, every day our traffic drops. till we installed it, traffic went up a little every single day, since the install it goes down every day consistently. it’s also reporting less and less pages – today google reports it had under 700 pages submitted even though it used to have over 1800. my partner says that’s because the older pages are now considered archived, but he doesn’t know much more than i about this, and till now what i was doing was working.
the main sitemap.xml no longer just lists all the pages, either – it is now a menu to separate sitemaps for categories, tags, posts, archives (why do we even have archives?), and it seems to have separate sitemaps for each month listed as sitemap-pt-post-2017-06.xml. when it was all on one page, our google traffic was much better.
i was much happier doing the sitemaps with a free online program i used to use as it put everything on one page – sitemap.xml – and we got great results, but it was having technical problems.
setting suggestions for the Google XML Sitemap plugin would be very much appreciated since either we did something wrong or i have no clue with settings for it. i’m guessing it could be both.
jonnytarGuestMy rule on sitemaps is never use them unless you coded it yourself and understand everything it’s doing. There’s too much in the sitemap protocol that can mess up your site if it’s not done properly.
So my suggestion would be to delete what you using and just ubmit your RSS feed as a sitemap. The first goal of a site map is to help Google discover new content. The RSS fee does exactly that and nothing more.
