I expected October to be much better than September with regards to sales, but it was just the opposite. When Google increased traffic to my main blog by almost 1000 visitors per day about two weeks ago (probably due to google penguin 4.0), my sales went down and now only trickle in sometimes. Even weekends are not so good for sales. That makes no sense, except if I got some new kind of visitors who are not as likely to buy memberships as those that search engines used to send me before.
But it’s still quite odd, because all my other site parameters (time on site, bounce rate, pages per session etc.) are pretty much unchanged.
How have your sales been in October? I wonder if I’m the only one experiencing October sales blues…
brianfinchGuestSales this month have been an improvement on other months, but only for CCBill sites. The rest are pretty much stagnant. This might just be because I tend to promote CCBill sites more than sites using Nats etc, though.
I’m seeing good increases in traffic too, mainly because we’ve invested in some site scanning software and working on various issues to optimize every post.
You might want to look into that increase and see whether there are any patterns in the data. Where are they coming from? What browsers? Are they using ad blockers?
You might also want to check whether it’s mobile or tablet traffic and how they are seeing those pages. It could be that you’re seeing a rise in traffic on a particular browser or divice but you’re not getting a corresponding increase in sales because the pages or links are not grabbing them in the same way.
I saw something similar on one of our sites years ago when we added improved mobile functionality. On a lot of the posts the money was from ads in the sidebar, but on mobile they were now apearing off the bottom of the post so visitors weren’t seeing any of them unless they scrolled down to leave a comment.
imarketerGuestI echo a lot of what brianfinch is saying, have a look into that traffic increase, is there a reason somehow those new people are not seeing all aspects of your site correctly.
Also if you have any data on the search inward keywords check you have not started ranking for 100’s of “Free Porn” type keywords as obviously people searching “free” whether from google or anywhere else will ultimately not result in a sale. If you have seen a drop it could be you have lost some good terms and these have been replaced with a lot of “crap” terms… I know I changed a global site meta on one of my blogs once a long time back and this happened…
MichealGuestIm seeing much better sales and traffic. So far this year has followed the exact same trend as last year.
JehveeGuestI am getting more sales in the past several days, so I am less in the panicky mode. Maybe it was just a random dry period without any real reason beyond mere coincidence. Or, it could be due to a security plugin (Wordfence) that was significantly slowing down my blog. I had no other option but to turn it off, and now although my blogs are exposed to occasional abuse (such as scraping), they run much faster and I started to see some sales since I pressed the turn off switch on that plugin. Again, it could be a coincidence or it could have been the main reason.
Thanks guys for the suggestions. I looked at my keywords in Google Search Console, and I didn’t see any new keyword combos or significant decrease in my current keyword rankings, but I will take a closer look at it.
The traffic is overall significantly increased, almost by 2000 visitors/day at the peak times (e.g. Sunday), but it seems these new visitors are not always willing to buy, or maybe they are but they want a fast and responsive site.
rodgerGuestI have had a change in traffic (more from google) but lower sales than normal since the change. I never do well with google traffic for some reason they dont buy.
formanGuestThere was a big Google update on the 23 Sept. I’ve also seen a increase in traffic since then, which started a week after their update.
bobbyjoeGuestThe sales on my adult sites are a lot of better than in the previous months.
napoleon32GuestI’m seeing strong improvements everywhere except CCBill where we saw drops in October… LOL
No rhyme or reason. 2016 has been a good year of steady improvement for us. Sticky, in particular, has made a huge impact.rodgerGuestThe second half of the month was totally different with strong sales all round. Fingers crossed November carries on the same.
