NewAffiliateGuest
Last year my husband purchased a “premium” .design domain for $985 thinking it would renew at a regular price. Well, renewal came and they charged $1010 instead of the regular $49.95! $50/year is high, but a thousand dollars a year for a domain is absurd. We’ve notified the registrar (Domain Shack which is under the Enom umbrella) that it’s gotta get fixed. There was no warning about renewal costs at the time the domain was “won”. I have 88 domains with them, so hopefully they’ll take it seriously. But I suspect we’ll have to charge back the renewal (which the bank will honor since the renewal period hasn’t started), and we’ll also try to charge back the first year since it was done under false pretenses. (Which raises the question – when they have to keep their chargeback ratio under 1% – is that based on % of transactions or % of the transaction revenue?)
I’m not expecting this fight to go well and I expect I’ll be burning bridges with Enom over it given the size of the chargebacks. SO… who do you guys recommend for domain registrars? Go Daddy is not an option – I use them occasionally, but years ago they had a SSL cert they literally refused to stop renewing, so I don’t trust them well enough to transfer 88 domains to them.
OpenSRS / Tucows is an option. I have a reseller account with them, though I’d need to do a bunch of programming to get things working properly since they’re all about their API – the “store” interface hasn’t been updated in years and you can’t buy any of the new gTLDs though it.
I also have an account with Uniregistry that I opened recently to get a cheap first year on a .porn domain. Are they good? Can they be trusted?
Bottom line who do you guys trust and recommend?
gumdropGuestFirstly I don’t know what a “premium” design domain is. There are some new gTLD are like .protection & security are going for like $3,000+ god only knows why.
I am pretty flexible in my domain prices. And I can offer reseller/partner pricing. – And I’ve been around since 1987.NewAffiliateGuest“Premium” in this case meant a higher than normal pre-landrush purchase price. I’ve done the same thing where you pay a bit extra to ensure you get the domain. But mine then renewed at the regular price for that gTLD.
This is not a .luxury type scenario where they’re upfront about being absurdly expensive.
I’ll send you an email if (or rather when) this whole thing goes sideways. Just curious though – whose umbrella are you under? Enom? OpenSRS? Something else?
BenGuestI’ve had good experience with Namecheap so far. No big problems worth mentioning. I don’t particularly fancy their new design and system, I think it has more glitches than the previous system, but it works. Their support is pretty good and responsive. Their prices are quite reasonable IMO. I think they’re also an Enom reseller.
Alternatively, you might try this registrar domainnamesystems.com. I think they’re a TUCOWS reseller. Their design is prehistoric, but I think they’re quite solid and dependable. Do your research of course.
gumdropGuestWell technically the landrush stuff should revert to the regular price. There’s something funny.
This is my definition of a “premium” domain:
edotdom.com/domain-registration/premium-domain.phpI’ve worked with Direct Information Pvt Ltd (Directi) and their foundation api Logicboxes since inception. Which I have an excellent relationship with. I guess I am more under their “umbrella” so to speak. I’ve also worked/work for years with Opensrs (TUCOWS).
I’ve been brokering domains since early ’90’s. Just good timing during those hay day domain days.
EvilChrisGuestI’ve used name.com for my stuff for years.
nakedGuestAnother Namecheap user with no problems to report. I previously only bought domains through GoDaddy but when they stopped offering renewal coupons and their price was about the same as Namecheap I started to go with them. Also, back in the whole net neutrality debate Namecheap was publicly out on the side I agreed with, GoDaddy was not. I don’t know if NC sells “premium” domains though.
NewAffiliateGuestFor those of you who recommend NameCheap – unlimited, DDOS-protected DNS is not included, correct? They do seem to have good prices, but paying more for DNS means they’re not so cheap. And the alternative, having NatNet handle my DNS, well that’s not such a great idea as we can see when their DNS servers were attacked a couple years ago now.
Gumdrop, I’m drafting an email to you now. I want to start moving everything away from Enom / Domain Shack this weekend. I’m thinking it’s either you or put everything under my reseller account on OpenSRS.
brittonGuestAt GoDaddy all the luxury domains say what they renew for under each one’s initial price. I assume you don’t want to go with them, though.
