“It really is just about keeping up with it.”

That’s all so very true, and I also learned it the hard way. It is in your best interest to keep track of your sites, scripts and database names. Have ALL of that removed if you aren’t using the site.

Another must have item was something I kept dreaming about back over 10 years ago, and that’s a script that would let you manage your entire blog empire from one place. Finally, some folks had the same ideas about bulk management for WordPress and I found and installed the InfiniteWP.

It was important to me that any management type scripts be something I could install on my server. I got badly burned by a couple of scripts that you could only use at the creator’s website. You know it’s really going to be a bad day when you wake up only to see that they have decided that it’s too much work to maintain the script and just shut down without notice …

From the admin area in InfiniteWP I can open every blog, add or remove plugins, make posts, clear out the spam closet, etc etc … and for new WP versions, plugin and theme updates I just let it update the data (takes like 20 seconds) and then OK whatever items need updated and it’s done in a matter of a few minutes. Talk about a time saver!!! And I rest a lot easier knowing that I don’t have to run around to all of my blogs every time a plugin needs a security upgrade.

And BTW … it’s free. Any additional features will cost you a few bucks, but I honestly haven’t bought any of them as I don’t have a need for any of the add ons.
