I have a couple of adult domains at GoDaddy and I want to transfer them to a buddy at enom/bulkregister.

GoDaddy says my buddy needs to initiate the transfer, then I approve it and provide him with the authorization numbers.

My buddy says when he initiates the transfer it immediately wants an authorization, which I can’t give him until the transfer process begins.

Can anyone help here? There’s definitely no way to start this process in GoDaddy.

That’s utter rubbish from GoDaddy. They have to give you authorization keys and it’s the only way you can transfer it to Enom.

Any Domain Registrar should hand that over to you. I know with some Registrars I had to email them to get the codes.

The whole transferring domains process with Godaddy (but am sure worse with other registrars) is unnecessarily convoluted and complicated. I had a nightmare transferring domains between accounts which I am glad is over.

Anyways, the authorization codes can be obtained by two methods –
    1) Go to “My Domains” and click on the domain name. In the following screen that opens up, there is a field “Authorization Code: /Send by Email”.
    2) When you go to “My Domains”, there is a tabbed menu on top, under the “Tools” option, follow the options to create an Exportable List for authorization codes. This option is useful if you have several domains and don’t want to go through each domain individually to have an email sent.

GoDaddy is partially correct, just not complete. You need to do the steps outlined by DOC, then do the steps outlined by Godaddy to you.
    So…
    1) unlock the domain
    2) get the Authorization Codes & send to your friend
    3) have your friend initiate the transfer
    4) this will produce an email to you, with a further verification and authorization numbers

its actually a very good way for godaddy to protect its customers from fraudulent domain transfers.

Thanks for the help, guys. Yeah, I can’t say I’m upset with GoDaddy, I appreciate the extra steps at making things secure.

Yeah, I think GoDaddy is doing the same thing, lupacexi. I’m still waiting for my buddy’s requests to come through by e-mail. I sent him the authorization codes and nothing’s getting through.

    A very handy thread.
I have a few domains I bought for a friend that are waiting to be transfered from GoDaddy so your timing is perfect.

If it’s a Namecheap name that’s actually handled by Enom, contact Enom and they can help. If it’s one since Namecheap became their own registrar, I have no idea.

I do know that a lot of registrars (GoDaddy included) do all sorts of shady stuff to keep you from transferring names. I discovered by accident that if you make ANY change in a GoDaddy domain, it automatically puts a 60 day block on transferring the name. ICANN says that isn’t OK, but nobody’s actually challenged GoDaddy on it.

For me, I can’t see why people like GoDaddy. THey have all these hidden fees, like $75 if they think you’re spamming from your domain, they can (and do) suspend resolution of a domain at will if they think there’s a problem, and all sorts of other stuff. I’ve also never found GoDaddy support to be particularly knowledgeable, you get the feeling it’s an outsourced call center.

Enom, on the other hand, seems to have knowledgeable and experienced people, and I almost never hear a complaint about them as far as their registration services. Oh, and a lot of stuff GoDaddy charges extra for, like multihomed DNS, is free with Enom.

I think the difference is, GoDaddy goes after individuals; Enom seems to only go after larger customers with at least 50 or 100 domains.

    Of course… YMMV.

Wow.. I’m surprised to hear about anyone having issues with GoDaddy.. I LOVE them..and I have seldom dealt with any company that has better customer service. (infact I always ASK them to send me Customer Satisfaction Surveys so I can rave about their service) I just recently transferred, 4 domains at the same time and it was super fast and easy.. (and me, a NON technical person)
Though.. I always call customer service to walk me through these processes… maybe that helps somewhat!
