About the same, maybe 60% outside US some days. That’s pretty much in-line with the real demographics of the internet. Roughly the same percentage is one of the ‘en’ language groups as primary language and another 15-20% is from countries where English is widely spoken/understood (lots of people in Scandinavia, Germany, Netherlands understand English very well in my experience). The problem with translation is that it isn’t in my experience terribly cheap and sometimes the slang translations are more humorously inaccurate than they are correct which completely kills the point of doing it.

Also, some concepts in American porn don’t translate, Once, I was working for a client whose tag line was ‘barely legal’ and a Dutch translator could not understand what it meant since like many concepts/marketing tactics they will work in one culture but not in another. Lots of corporations that try this sort of translation go far beyond just translation of the words, they often make the entire site’s approach, concept, colors, etc., different to appeal to different cultures. Which is a huge amount of work with a pretty good chance of not getting it right.

Also, keep in mind that Chrome will translate languages in-browser – just a click of a mouse. There’s also an extension for Firefox. Sometimes it’s imperfect, true, but usually close enough to get the point across.

Just imagine how far off the translation gets if the model they’re trying to sell is named Kip.
