If I was thinking of setting up a review/blog site in WordPress, what would be a good theme or template to use?

I’m thinking simple front page with a few new posts showing at once and, somehow, archiving individual reviews in their own categories once they have shown on the front page; then having a list of categories to one side in a column.

I understand about widgets, columns and plugins and have been using WordPress for around 10 years now, but I just wondered if anyone had hit on a good customisable theme that might suit?

(I know that some people will say ‘don’t use WordPress!’ and others will, rightly, say ‘Hire a professional’, but neither is an option at the moment, thanks.)

I would say do use WordPress!
I might be the only one who thinks this but it seems to me security has improved greatly, thanks in no small part to Wordfence. I haven’t had any problems with security on any of mine for the last two or three years now. And from what I’ve seen it’s still better at grabbing Google traffic than any other option.

As for a theme, it’s really impossible to say given how many there are, but I would say that you shouldn’t stick to only the free themes. There are some great paid themes out there and they’re not that expensive when you consider the benefits of a good theme with support for a few months. I would recommend taking a look at Themeforest.net, they have so many in various categories you’re almost guaranteed to find one there to do what you want.

    Good luck.

I’ve been trying out a lot of themes lately, one thing I’ve found is you’ll need to install 4-5-6 or more to see which ones function well enough within’ your needs, they’re not going to look like the demos in most cases. Like conran said, buying a licensed theme is always wise and generally the pro features are worthy of the extra bucks, so that being said what I usually do is search for the developers who have themes in free and purchase, you can always upgrade.

My suggestion of course would be a bootsrap theme, first look at what your needs are then decide according which ones to install, keep it light and make certain all the functions you’re looking for will work, and there isn’t a ton of customizations you’ll need to do. Hope that helps.
