I have a few domains I’m not really doing anything with and the thought came to me (perhaps a crazy one?) of starting a porn list site like ThePornDude, TopPornSites, etc.

Are these sites hard to set up?
Can they be done with WordPress?
Can they be done on shared hosting?
Are there plugins you can use to automate the process?
    Are they hard to manage?

Sorry for all the questions… would love any feedback on this topic!

I can’t answer all your questions, but here’s what I can tell you:

The current directory sites all use different platforms / scripts and one might be easier to set up than the other. I hired someone to write the script for mine, It’s a standalone script with front-end and back-end. However, it’s possible to do it with WordPress (although you would need some modifications). I know ThePornDude is using WordPress.

My website is running on a shared server. Since the pages are relatively small in size and you only need to store pictures (no videos), I don’t see a reason why you would need a VPS or even dedicated hosting.

Sharing sites aren’t hard to manage, but I guess you need to be consistent though. You need to approve submissions at least once a day. It is not recommended to neglect the site during holidays. You will lose both visitors as well as submitters.

I am not sure if any plugins you could use, since I am not using WordPress. I assume the ones running on WP are at least using a submission form plugin that sends the results to a mysql database as well as some kind of voting plugin.

    Hope this helps you…

I think the most difficult thing is getting traffic. Submitters are generally a greedy lot: they want traffic (and lots of it or they’ll stop submitting to you) and they don’t want to send much back.

Submitters are terrified that the text link or button back to the link list or sharing site is going to drain off their traffic at a titanic rate. The truth is (I’ve a run a link list) those text links and banners get very few clicks especially when they are buried at the bottom of a post page 98 feet past the end of the post or when they are listed with 49 other sites in a blogroll.

So if you think that you can set up a sharing site and rely on submitters to send traffic to keep it going, it doesn’t work that way. Submitters send some traffic, but you basically already need traffic for this venture to work.

I manage one and it sends out heaps more traffic than it ever gets back.

My own perception of the porn list sites is that the successful ones (like I often say about the top affiliate blogs) have an audience. It’s much harder to build that audience unless you have the brand there to support it. I think ThePornDude has done a great job, not least because it’s part of the much bigger GD brand. The same with TopPornSites, they already had the following there, so they could tap into that for the sharing site.

I guess what I’m saying is that I think starting one of these on its own is going to be much like starting a new blog from scratch, getting the traffic there and the following is going to take a lot of work. I would probably only consider doing this myself if I were going to attach it to a blog with a considerable audience already there.
