I’ve been reading up on this topic a lot. The general consensus seems to be that excerpts are better for blogs with “wordy” posts and frequently updated, while displaying the full posts on the homepage is better for blogs that are more media-focused. I’m running an adult blog so the latter would apply in my case – I rarely write more than 70-80 words a post – but I’m concerned about increasing loading times among other things. Plus. I personally prefer excerpts even if it may not be the best choice for my niche.

What’s everyone else’s take on the full posts vs. excerpts issue when it comes to adult blog?

If your blog posts are relatively short and contain only a one picture or video, then you can display full posts on your adult site but I am almost always using excerpts for many reasons and I am getting better results than if I would show full posts.

If you use excerpts, you are going to improve the page load time for your website, increase pageviews and reduce bounce rate.

Keep in mind that if you display full posts on your site, so people can see a picture, watch a video or read some post without having to click through to the posts, it counts as a bounce. So it is a big no no for SEO.

I agree with you overall. Though there are tools and plugins to circumvent the bounce rate issue; I use a plugin called Reduce Bounce Rate. It basically tells Google Analytics that if a user is on a page for more than a particular amount of time (e.g., 30 seconds) not to count it as a bounce when the users leaves. My bounce rate is only a quarter of what it used to be thanks to it.

For excerpts: do you think it’s better to include part of the text, just a thumbnail and title, or just a thumbnail with no text at all? I imagine that some text would be much better for SEO, but I’m looking over my GA stats over the years and my highest number of sessions and pageviews were during a time where my theme only showed thumbnails with no text. Though that may have been also just a matter of the content I was posting at the time.

In my case, a bit of text (the first 20 words or so) with a thumbnail and the title of course, works the best.
