    @conran

hand ups – I have over 2500 tags in 6000 odd posts

when you say defined, so its better to have a post with a tag of say American Twinks, than a tag of American and a tag of Twinks?

    I hope not…

No, I would say it’s better to have them as separate tags. American Twinks is too specific. If someone is coming for twinks they probably won’t care if they’re American or British.

If you added American Twinks, you’d then need to add British Twinks… and then what if you have a muscle guy? You’d need to add another for American Muscle, and all the rest.

In my experience if you add tags that are too specific it becomes a Rabbit hole of more and more tags to add more and more variants. Whereas if you have just American and Twinks as separate tags you won’t be needing to add all the variants when they pop up in the future.

I think it’s also important to consider the user experience here. If you add a new tag that’s too specific, you might only ever have one post in that group, which is likely to piss them off. If you define it down to a more general theme using fewer tags of genuine interest they’ll click that and get more results – which means they stay on site longer and you have more content to sell to them.

I would say it’s best to build a plan of tagging by listing all the things your readers want (tip, check out what words searchers are using, and if you can what they are searching on/clicking in tag form on the site)

For example, for FitMales you might choose:

    Nationality
Physical build (twink, twunk, jock, muscle)
    Cut/Uncut
Clothing (trackies, shorts, uniform, sports kit)
Sexual acts (wanking, sucking, fucking, facial, bukkake, orgy)
    Bareback

That’s probably all you need and would result in probably 5 – 10 tags for each post, and with each leading to more content than visitors are currently getting by clicking on a very specific tag.

And remember, if you do restructure your tags and narrow them down to be more functional, 301 the biggest of the bunch you’re getting rid of to the closest match. It shouldn’t have too much of an impact on traffic, and if it does it won’t be for long. I did this on one blog and saw an improvement after a week. I wouldn’t 301 too many of them though, just the ones that seem to get the most hits (you can check that in Awstats via cPanel).

The biggest bit of work is going back through post to tag them all again, but it will pay off in the long run.

I have a number of rules on tagging…

    1. What concepts jump out at you when you look at the pics/video?
    2. Is it a good example of that concept or just a so-so example? The more competitive the term, the better of an example it needs to be. (So “muscle jock” better be a really excellent example, but “guiche” doesn’t have to be since it’s rare to find pics of guiches.)
    3. Is this a term many people care about enough to search? If not, move onto the next term. Google Trends can help you figure out whether it’s a popular term. (You might also ask if it’s typically a mainstream term. If so, it’s going to be really hard for you to rank, so why bother?)

Ive 301’d them all, is that bad?

regarding everything else you said in the post, thats what ive pretty much done

Did about 500 yesterday then my brain started to die

The way I’m doing it atm is I decide what tag is best and tag all other tag posts into that one, then 301 the other tags to the chosen / new tag.

“In my experience if you add tags that are too specific it becomes a Rabbit hole of more and more tags to add more and more variants. Whereas if you have just American and Twinks as separate tags you won’t be needing to add all the variants when they pop up in the future.”

This is exactly what happened, had uncut british guy for example then had to have 10 others for most varients.

P.S do you find that one word tags are better?

It’s an unknown, but one of those things various SEO bloggers have said can damage how Google handles your site. If you 301 too many links it might cause Google to start wondering what’s going on.

As you’ve done it already I would say don’t worry about it too much, just sit back and see what happens. There’s likely to be some changes in traffic for a couple of weeks anyway so pin-pointing it down to that would probably be hard to do. It will likely fix itself in that time too even if Google does throw a hissy fit about it.

P.S do you find that one word tags are better?

I think they would be by default, simply because the user is going to get more use out of the results it leads to.

Using your example, there might be 10 posts with “uncut British guy”, but the user just cares about the performer being uncut, or British. Now when you reclassify all those posts there’s likely to be hundreds of results for each individual tag rather than just 10 for one, and then 10 for another that they might not click on.

Important to remember that tags in WP are basically for the user and not for Google. The tags you use have very little (if any) impact on SEO. But, the residual effects of the improved user experience certainly will have an impact.

So, Google doesn’t really care how you use those tags, but it does care if your visitor clicks on one, finds nothing relevant and leaves within moments.

This is all about the user experience, and as that improves it naturally leads to increased traffic.

Surely its got to be better than having shedloads of 404 errors?

More I think about it tho, sort of make sense – the ones with no / low rank are not that important to redirect the ones that have decent rank are important to you site so redirect.

Well, there’s disagreement over whether Google pays any attention to tag pages. It also depends on how you have them set up on your blog. I believe you have the option of making them indexable or not. Most of the information I have seen suggests it’s better to leave them out and not have them indexed.

When you think about what the SE gets from those pages, it’s going to be very limited. Most people don’t add any description to their tag pages, so it’s likely all there will be is an excerpt from each post at the most, and a featured image.

As for 404 v’s 301, both will be filtered out and dropped by Google eventually anyway. If you 301 then Google should eventually drop the original link and replace it with the new one. If you leave it as a 404 Google will eventually drop that too, and you’ll probably already have the new one crawled by then.

As there’s so much uncertainty about it and there’s no way of getting a straight answer, I would just redirect the most popular tags and drop the rest, let Google sort it out for you.

As long as you’re looking at redirecting the tags that get the highest traffic overall and not just from Google, you should also pick up any that are linked to from outside and getting good traffic.

Also forgot to mention that it would be wise to check for 404’s in about a week, see if there are any with high traffic that you might have missed.
