I think it’s been a while since we had a discussion about traffic sources for adult websites, and now that Google seems to be becoming less and less relevant in that process I wonder if it’s time we start sharing tips and advice?

I guess some of you will have your closely guarded secrets, but I’m not scared to admit that we get most of our traffic for one of our main blogs from Tumblr right now. It depends on your goals, but we’re getting a great following there and converting traffic pretty well. We’re expanding the methods beyond affiliate sales too, which we hope will bring in a couple of new revenue options.

But, Tumblr is basically the only one performing like that and I wonder if we’re missing out on other opportunities.

Does Twitter actually work for you? Do you bother with Instagram? Have you ever managed to dive into Reddit?
I’d love to know what your experiences are and where you think we should test things out.

    Anyone want to share?

I will stick my head over the parapet.

Google – steady, but only just. I have given up with Twitter after being banned twice, to be honest it was a bit of a life drain as I could never pin a sale to it. Instagram, no joy and they are very hot on content.

Pintrest however was a bit of a revelation, massive traffic, like thousands of hits a day, however I guess they monitor the links my site was blocked, but again I couldn’t say I noticed any sales increase.

I have a presence on Tumblr, but I do much with it. I’m always a bit wary of that one as I have come across some dodgy content, but maybe I need to review that.

Google traffic is steady and still a big traffic source for me.

I used to get a LOT of traffic from Facebook, but my account got banned last month. I knew that day would come, but it was good while it lasted.

Social platforms (ranked from most to least traffic):
    Twitter
    Tumblr
    Pinterest
    Instagram
    Reddit.

    @DOC,

One of our accounts was locked down last week because we used a Hootsuite to schedule some posts. Apparently they’re fighting back against any use of automation for posting. I just wish they’d treat the Nazis and Russian trolls the same way.

I never got into instagram but it’s one we’re looking at. I know there are a couple of adult sites on there posting tame images and they seem to get away with that. I’m not sure there’s a way for affiliates to make use of it.

That’s another one we need to test out. I think it might work for us because we’re heavily promoting fiction right now, it’s just finding the media to share.

I’m on there quite a lot these days, and while I did also encounter some really dodgy content in the past it’s pretty rare. I tend to stay in my own circle of followers and tags. It works for us.

I am surprised Twitter is ranked higher than Tumblr, but I suppose it depends how you use it. I still only dabble there and should probably get back into posting more often and building that following. It just seems to be a lot harder to get that following there than on other platforms.

I still have no idea how to engage on Reddit. I’ve been told it would be excellent for getting an audience for our fiction posts, but every time I check it out I feel like an old man being given a VR headset.

What about developing something that *is* safe to use on these platforms? I have a couple of projects in the works These will be single picture posts that can be rich on descriptives. The link will go to the picpost, and not to an actual porn site. I am still not sure if I want the link on the picpost (not the social media) to go directly to the sponsor gallery, or to the sponsor itself or if a text link below the picture will be better. I know when I see a picture I like, I want to know where to find more. Most of what I promote is pretty hardcore and I truly would not want to put any of it onto social media. These projects will be pure safe for work with no private parts showing. I realize in some areas, men kissing is very controversial, but hey, this is the 21st century.

The problem with a few of these platforms is that they ban you for the destination as well as the content of the pic you’re posting.

I can understand why, but it makes a lot of them useless to us unless you have a totally clean blog.

So really it’s kind of the same sources still with Google, Twitter and Tumblr being the only ones that actually allow porn or links to it. The rest blocks you when found out.

I think most of them are like that, apart from maybe Reddit. But, as far as I can make out, the discussions on Reddit where you can post links to adult content are all moderated and they’ll kick you out at the mere hint of you marketing anything.

Pinterest gives a lot of traffic, but we never saw any bump in sales at all. So good for trying to get your brand or main site out there to the masses and hope one day they return, but that is about it.
